Eureka Springs officer-involved shooting ruled justified

ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division investigated an officer-involved shooting fatality that occurred Friday, March 1, 2024, in Eureka Springs. They presented their findings to the Prosecuting Attorney.

Flippin boat plant sees layoffs

Bass Pro has laid off a total of 176 employees at three boat manufacturing facilities in the area. The company laid off 85 employees at the Tracker Marine manufacturing plant in Lebanon, Bolivar and Flippin, Arkansas

NARMC begins new fiscal year

Tragic crime, 75 years ago

Note: The tragic incident related here took place in Newton County on January 2, 1953. The Boone County jail in Harrison housed the suspect for a short time, and much of the investigation was also done in Harrison, led by Deputy Prosecutor Joe Villines. GED Tutors needed

A new program with North Arkansas College has great potential to help people in our community by tutoring low-literacy students prepare for the GED test. The program is seeking tutors — those who have some experience or related experience and an interest in teaching. At the tutor’s convenience, the tutor will meet with the student for 1-2 hours weekly at the college. NorthArk hours are Monday – Thursday 8 a.m.—5 p.m.

HHS student taken into police custody

Harrison High School administrators were alerted to a gun on campus on Tuesday, April 23. School officials discovered that the student was in possession of a BB gun of the pistol type.

Children's book sale announced

The Boone County Friends of the Library (FOL) will hold their Children's and Young Adult Book Sale on Friday, May 10, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The book sale will take place at the Boone County Library located at 221 W. Stephenson Ave. in Harrison.

Tanker wreck closes Marion roads

A tanker truck wrecked over onto its side Friday, slowing traffic in Marion County. Office of Emergency Management reported the tanker truck overturned in Flippin early Friday morning. The wreck closed roads to thru traffic at Hwy 62 and Hwy 202 all the way to Hwy 62 Business at Powell Feed in Flippin.

Further charges possible following auto wreck death

Terri Ginochio, 64, of Harrison, died at Cox South April 16 following a long hospitalization after an auto wreck that occurred in February. The two-vehicle wreck occurred on Lakeshore Drive, in Harrison, on Feb. 8. The wreck was located on the bridge crossing Crooked Creek near Wonder Willa Park. A 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup, driven by 37 year-old Alex Lynn Rocky Moore, impacted Ginochio's 2005 Toyota Camry when the Silverado crossed the center line while traveling Eastbound.

Camp Jack column: Paying our other national debt

We really need to do something about our national debt. No, I’m not talking about the nearly $35 trillion dollars Congress has borrowed over the years. I am discussing a more important debt. A debt born in blood, sweat and sacrifice. The saying “Freedom Isn’t Free” rings so true and the people who paid this steep price are called veterans. We owe them a massive debt that can never be repaid, but we can try to do a better job taking care of them.

For the first time since voters passed the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment of 2016, more than 100,000 patients have been certified. On April 13, the Arkansas Department of Health posted the current medical marijuana patient count at 102,222.

Boone County Cattlemen’s Association April meeting

The Boone County Cattlemen’s Association met on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the John Paul Hammerschmidt Center on the campus of North Arkansas College. This month’s meeting was sponsored by Midwest Equipment in Harrison. President John Muncy opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests. Hope Cottages open house

Happy Taco Tuesday, well April 15 is tax day hope everyone got theirs done yesterday. It was pretty but today looks like rain.
March 29 is the date set aside annually to honor Vietnam Veterans. This year the Arkansas Society and the Harrison Colony Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, partnered with the Jordan Milam Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, to honor their chapter members who were veterans of the Vietnam War and to properly welcome them home.
Nobel Peace Prize winner in philosophy Albert Schweitzer once wrote, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but the one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” This particular brand of community dedication is remarkable, and few resemble the sentiment such as Senior Corporal Justin Ricketts of the Arkansas State Police Department.
Have you ever read or looked at a recipe and thought, "I have to try that?" Or, maybe you've eaten a dish and felt the need to ask for the recipe. Well, I do it quite often as I surf the Internet or browse Pinterest (yes, I have 8,000-plus recipes saved to my Pinterest account).
Landon Curtis grew up in this area, graduating from Valley Springs High School before finishing his education at Missouri State University. His wife, Allie, is also a Harrison native, and Curtis says they’re thankful to be raising their two boys in this community. One of his favorite quotes from the couple’s oldest son is, “Daddy cooks, Mommy cleans.” Curtis works for Anstaff Bank and serves on the board of the Buffalo National River Partners.

NAACP joins Central High students suing state

WASHINGTON — The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has joined a high school teacher and two students who sued Arkansas over the state's ban on critical race theory and “indoctrination” in public schools, asking a federal judge to strike down the restrictions as unconstitutional.

UA Historian publishes agricultural history book

The Oxford Handbook of Agricultural History, edited by Jeannie Whayne of the U of A Department of History, was recently published. Whayne says that agricultural history has enjoyed a rebirth in recent years, in part because of the way the agricultural enterprise promotes economic and cultural connections in an era that has become ever more globally focused.

Northark Signing Day announced

The National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) in cooperation with North Arkansas College (Northark) is sponsoring the annual National CTE Letter of Intent Signing Day on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The local ceremony will be held in Pioneer Pavilion on the south campus, 1–3 p.m.

School garden contest open

Entries are being accepted for the annual Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year Contest, sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture and the Farm Credit Associations of Arkansas. Applicants may be any school, early childhood education facility, or alternative learning environment that had a school garden during the 2023-2024 school year or is planning to start a garden in the 2024-2025 school year.
