Downtown … the comeback

For those who remember our downtown in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll recall it was bustling with traffic activities and always well-shopped. There was never a vacancy, and parking was always in short supply. We can not only regain that vibrancy but surpass it. However, this won't be easy. It will require hard work, patience, a bit of luck, and, most importantly, all of us working together.

City worker hit

The Harrison Fire Department was paged out Thursday before noon to reports of a person being hit by a car on Cottonwood Road, near Bunker Road. City street department worker Ricky Morlen was performing "Flagger" duties — directing traffic for other city workers along the roadway, when he was struck by a vehicle. Reportedly, Moren's foot was run over in the incident.

Capps Batavia Volunteer Fire meeting

The Capps Batavia Volunteer Fire Protection Association will be holding it's annual meeting on Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m. at the Capps Firehouse at 4391 Old Capps Road in Harrison. All dues paying members (property owners within the district) are encouraged to attend.

CLG Historian recommends commission

The small ad hoc Downtown Strategies Committee, appointed by Mayor Jerry Jackson under the umbrella of the HHBA (Historic Harrison Business Association) non-profit, has been meeting weekly to discuss options and plans for protecting the historic downtown, preserving property values, and assisting business owners with practical ways to attract customers.
The Harmon Fire Station has supplies available to assist in tornado recovery. Communities rally together for tornado recovery

The deadly tornado that struck the region last weekend led to great need for those directly affected by it. However, the strength of compassion and sense of community in the region has led to a strong response to meet that need. Government agencies, community organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals have rallied together to get resources to those who need them.

Wellness clinic coming in July

The U.S. Department of Defense in partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District presents Ozark Wellness Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) July 16-25. This is a clinic providing medical, dental, optical and veterinary care at no cost to the patient.

Marion starts recovery after fatal storms

Early Sunday morning, a tornado entered Marion County after damaging several structures in southern Boone County, including the Boone County Law Enforcement Center. The EF-3 tornado brought winds up to 145 mph as it followed US highway 62 to the south, near Pyatt, where it committed extensive tree damage before tossing and destroying mobile homes on county road 4010.

Baseball, Ozarks pastime

Baseball has been a favorite Ozarks spring and summer pastime for over 100 years, and it still is. The youth baseball and softball seasons being in full swing, this nostalgic look back to “simpler times” in the early 1950’s, shows that baseball was quite popular then as now. This information comes from the museum files as well as from the files of the Harrison Daily Times. Perhaps the reader may recognize some of the names.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released its population estimates for 2023, and it showing the continued growth of the northwest portion of the state of Arkansas.

USACE park update, closings follow storm damage

ROGERS — Until further notice from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Beaver Lake Project Office, the Prairie Creek and Horseshoe Bend campgrounds and day use areas are closed. The boat ramps for both locations will remain open. Rocky Branch campground is also closed however, the day use area and boat ramp remain open.

BELLEFONTE — The National Weather Service has issued preliminary reports on a tornado that ripped through Boone and Marion counties on Sunday.

ROGERS — According to court documents, Carlos Gonzalez, 59, of Rogers, filed false tax returns that underreported the gross receipts from his tree-trimming and removal business, Charley’s Tree Service. From 2014 through 2020, Gonzalez deliberately underreported more than $3 million in gross receipts from his business resulting in a tax loss of approximately $920,694.

Study finds discreet shipping used to sell e-cigarettes to minors

FAYETTEVILLE — Researchers at the University of Arkansas found self-identified small business owners on TikTok are circumventing a number of local, state and federal laws that restrict the individual sale of tobacco products. Specifically, the researchers found that 45% of the videos highlighted the fact that they did not require identification to verify the purchaser’s age. 

Evangelical seminary reconsiders LGBTQ+ policies

LOS ANGELES — Fuller Theological Seminary, an evangelical school in Pasadena, California, is deliberating whether to become more open to LGBTQ+ students who previously faced possible expulsion if found to be in a same-sex union. That's according to a draft of proposed revisions to the seminary's sexual standards that was obtained by The Associated Press.

A couple weeks ago, a real-life cowboy pulled his truck and horse trailer into the parking lot adjacent to Camp Jack. As he unloaded his best friend and expertly threw a saddle blanket across its back, the two looked like a scene from a long-ago western. They weren’t as famous as Roy Rogers and Trigger, but this impressive duo was well known to countless thousands in this neck of the woods.

Mark Mathis loves to cook. Mathis moved to Holiday Island with a dream to open a restaurant in Eureka Springs but the plan fell through when COVID hit. "I was disappointed at first but I came to realize that my dream was really just to live here and opening a restaurant was just my excuse to relocate," shared Mathis.

The Boone/Newton County Retired Teachers and Support Staff Association met Tuesday, May 7, at Western Sizzlin' in Harrison. The meeting was called to order by President Lisa Bailey. Beverly Bear led the Invocation, and Wilma Finney led the Pledge of Allegiance.
