USACE park update, closings follow storm damage

ROGERS — Until further notice from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Beaver Lake Project Office, the Prairie Creek and Horseshoe Bend campgrounds and day use areas are closed. The boat ramps for both locations will remain open. Rocky Branch campground is also closed however, the day use area and boat ramp remain open.

BELLEFONTE — The National Weather Service has issued preliminary reports on a tornado that ripped through Boone and Marion counties on Sunday.

BERRYVILLE — Chief of police, Robert J. Bartos, has released more information concerning a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 18, outside the Auto Zone on West Trimble in Berryville. Berryville Police Officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:29 p.m. for a report of shots fired.

AAA gas price report

The statewide gas price average in Arkansas was $3.11 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, according to the AAA Arkansas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is two cents less compared to that day last week and is flat compared to that day last year.

Council hears from homeowners

Harrison City Council met in regular session on Thursday, May 23. The council resumed discussion of an item previously discussed at the May 9 committees meeting — condemnation requests for properties located at 810 South Hickory and 801 North Chestnut.

Memorial Day ceremony planned downtown

On Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m., The Boone County War Memorial Association will meet at the Historic Downtown Harrison Bandstand for their Memorial Day ceremony. Representatives from the Harrison VFW Post 2881, The American Legion Post 44 and the DAV Chapter 6 will present during the wreath ceremony. Honored guest speaker & veteran, Lionel Cantu, will also be present. Special performances by vocalist Shelly Watson, Caven Clark, and the 1st Baptist Church Choir will be given.  The War Memorial Association express gratitude for the help of Boy Scout Troop 60, Sandra Hilliard with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Ozark Arts Council, Tempo Sound, the Boone County Quorum Court, the EMS Color Guard and Camp Jack.

May Cattlemen's Association meeting held

The Boone County Cattlemen's Association met on May 9 at the John Paul Hammerschmidt Center at North Arkanasas College. This month's meeting was sponsored by Equity Bank in Harrison. BCCA President John Muncy welcomed those in attendance and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Gerald King offered a blessing for the meal. Muncy recognized birthdays and anniversaries. We were treated to a meal of hamburgers and fixins', cowboy beans, coleslaw, condiments, assorted desserts, and water.

The Capps Batavia Volunteer Fire Protection Association will be holding it's annual meeting on Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m. at the Capps Firehouse at 4391 Old Capps Road in Harrison. All dues paying members (property owners within the district) are encouraged to attend.

On Sunday, May 19, at approximately 5 p.m., Buffalo National River dispatch was notified of a possible drowning in the upper district of the river near the Blue Hole, between Hasty and Carver.

Military shares medical mission plan with local stakeholders

JASPER — A military Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) officially named Mission: Ozark Wellness will be coming to Jasper and Kingston school campuses this summer. Officers of the US Army Reserve who will be leading the mission met with key community leaders from Newton County at the Jasper School Cafetorium Wednesday afternoon, May 8. They came to explain the scope of the mission and ask that the information be spread to the public so people in need of the services can benefit from them.

Flags placed by 20th Century Club

The Harrison 20th Century Club placed flags Thursday morning at the gravesites of Veterans at the Maplewood Cemetery, Maple Leaf Cemetery, and Rose Hill Cemetery located in Harrison. 1,730 flags were placed by the 20th Century Club members and volunteers for Memorial Day.

Greetings from rainy, rainy Capps. I'm writing this on Wednesday morning and it's flat out coming down! Thankfully, I got a majority of my hay cut, baled and picked up by Tuesday afternoon because it rained hard for about 15 minutes around 5:30 pm. Kudos to David at the Bear Creek Machine Shop for getting my sickle bar fixed quickly.
The Boone County Senior Activity and Wellness Center will host a special spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, June 7 at 5 p.m. at the Center, located at 1516 Rock Springs Road in Harrison. A gospel singing group will perform during the fundraiser.
At 94 years old, Harrison’s William Joseph “Shorty” Ozier is still an active member of the community. Ozier was born at Wilson Springs — a place named so after his grandpa. While he did make a move to Tulsa for some time while working for R.J. Reynolds, Ozier returned to Harrison after retiring.

GREEN FOREST — A disturbance in the crowd briefly interrupted the Green Forest Class of 2024 graduation ceremony held Friday night. Near the end of the evening, during a speech being given by the class president — Pablo Moreno, a small group of members of the audience arose in the stands and began to argue and fight.
