Boone County Cattlemen’s Association March meeting

The Boone County Cattlemen’s Association held its March meeting on the 14th at the John Paul Hammerschmidt Center of North Arkansas College. The meeting was called to order by President John Muncy, who then led the Pledge of Allegiance. Dale Crunkelton led the prayer. There were 45 members and guests in attendance. They enjoyed a meal of brisket, cole slaw, ranch beans, potato salad, bread, assorted cookies, soft drinks, and water. The meeting was sponsored by WT Equipment in Berryville.

Team effort, planning, led to smooth eclipse weekend

Mayor Jerry Jackson told the audience at the City Council Committee meeting Thursday night that there had been no problems during the eclipse. Then, for emphasis, he repeated, “No problems at all.”

Hot Spring County sheriff charged

MALVERN — As a result of an ASP Criminal Investigation Division probe, Hot Spring County Sheriff Derek Scott Finkbeiner was charged on Wednesday, April 10, with misdemeanor sexual solicitation and felony unauthorized use of the Arkansas Crime Information Center. He surrendered to the Hot Spring County Detention Center.

Body found by Bull Shoals Lake

The Marion County Sheriff's office has reported that at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, Marion County deputies were dispatched to the Welcome Ridge boat launch area in northern Marion County after area residents located the body of an unidentified white female, floating just offshore in Bull Shoals Lake.

Yellville hosts eclipse watchers

Folks of all ages convened on Yellville on Monday, April 8 to view the total eclipse of the sun together. The Yellville area received approximately 2 minutes and 48 seconds of totality during the eclipse, making it an appealing destination for eclipse chasers from around the country.

Trip to town, 120 years ago

[Note] The following highly entertaining first-hand account was given by Albert Raney, Sr. in the Harrison Daily Times, 1969 when he was 75 years old. It is hard to grasp now, in the days of instant everything, including communication and travel, but Albert’s story relates his first trip to Harrison from Newton County when he was 9 years old. Apparently he had never been out of Newton County, and had never seen an electric light until this adventure to another world---the city of Harrison.

Paige Henderson grew up in a few small towns in Iowa and Wisconsin before moving to Arkansas. She enjoys cooking with her husband, Jason — a freelance copywriter. The couple live near Berryville, where they work from home, "I’m an IT support specialist and I love the freedom I have working remotely. It gives me the chance to live almost anywhere and I'm happy to be here in Northwest Arkansas," says Henderson.

Northark basketball players assist FOL

Members of the North Arkansas College Basketball team moved 4500 books to the Boone County Library on Tuesday for the annual Spring Book Sale which begins on Thursday, 9 a.m.-Noon (FOL members hours), Noon-5 p.m. (open to public).

The statewide gas price average in Arkansas was $3.19 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, according to the AAA Arkansas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is two cents more compared to that day last week and flat compared to that day last year.
LOWELL — Ryan Waters has filed a lawsuit alleging he was fired from J.B. Hunt for being white and opposing the company’s discrimination against white men. Waters was employed as Vice President for People by the company at the time of his termination in January 2023. He has filed the discrimination suit in Washington County Circuit Court through his attorneys Bradley Hull and Michael Graugnard of Hickey & Hull Law Partners of Fort Smith.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy herds in Texas, Kansas, Michigan, Idaho, and New Mexico. Symptoms of the virus in dairy cattle include decreased lactation, low appetite, and thickening of milk. To date, there have been no reported cases of HPAI in livestock within Arkansas.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced the opening of the 60-day application window for the Investing in America Small Business Opportunity Program (SBOP) – a U.S. Treasury competitive grant program funded by the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI).

Knight, Keen to wed

DAR honors good citizenship

On March 26, 2024, during a regular meeting of the Harrison Colony Chapter, NSDAR, four students from area school districts received recognition as DAR Good Citizen nominees. These nominees were selected by their school districts based on the qualities they have demonstrated in dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism and were eligible to enter a scholarship essay contest sponsored by Daughters of the American Revolution at the chapter, state, and national levels.

Highway 392 was a busy highway going through Batavia on Monday of this week! Lots of people driving to their designated spot to watch the sun eclipse! I had the privilege of sitting on a bench on my patio and watching that spectacular event.
That was exciting to see on Monday April 8. We sat outside to watch the moon to cover the sun. We only got 97% but I had a good seat in my front yard with my glass of ice. I have been losing weight that way. It was great to see it and to have in your front yard than to have a lot of people traveling to see it.
Greetings from Capps. As of this writing on Wednesday evening, we're getting quite a substantial amount of much needed rain. That should help green things up some more and lessen the fire danger.
LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the 2024 Arkansas Century Farm Program. This program recognizes Arkansas families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years. The program is voluntary and there is no cost to apply.
As part of an ongoing yearlong celebration of its 50th Anniversary, North Arkansas College invites the public to the south campus on Friday, April 19, 2024, to commemorate the late Dr. Bill Baker. Dr. Baker was the founding college president who became the longest running college president in the state of Arkansas. Dr. Baker was the college’s president for 27 years before he retired in 2000.

Addams Family Musical coming to HHS PAC

The Addams Family, A New Musical will be performed at the Harrison High School Performing Arts Center April 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. and April 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at HHSPAC.org.

Some schools to close for eclipse Monday

Many area schools will be closed on Monday, April 8. School closures include Alpena, Omaha, Valley Springs, Lead Hill, Green Forest, Flippin, Yellville, Jasper, Deer, Mt. Judea and Ozark Mountain School District.

The Library will be closed on Monday however we will still be having the Eclipse on the Street! “Eclipse on the Street” is coming — april 8—12, Noon—3 p.m. Join us for a fun filled day! We will have vendors, food trucks, games for kids, and we will have the planetarium open. Bring your lawn chairs and spend the afternoon with us watching this spectacular event.
